Forum Auditions

This is a piano solo performance event by students at seven different levels, to be judged individually on a number basis from 1+ to 4. Students perform individually.  Forum Auditions is an event that requires a high standard of preparation and performance from the student in order to achieve a superior rating.  Judging standards are consistently high in order to challenge the student and teacher to work towards their musical potential.

Pay for your student’s registration: 

    1. OPTION 1 (preferred): Send payments via Zelle to fmteftreasurer@gmail.com. Add a message to the transfer with the memo “Forum Auditions enrollment for #__ students.”

    2. OPTION 2: Mail your registration check to the chair. Your payment must be postmarked no later than the deadline. Make check out to FORUM.

DEADLINES:

Due Wed. Oct. 02, 2024 – Student enrollment estimates. All teachers who intend to enroll their students in this event must email their estimated number of participating students to the chairperson. Due Wed. Nov. 6th, 2024 – Entry form and check. Please submit the online entry form and email the entry form as an attachment to irina.y.kuo@gmail.com. TEACHER REQUIREMENTS:
All teachers who enter students will be scheduled to monitor for the morning or afternoon.
All participating teachers are required to work at this event. Teachers who are unable to fulfill their work requirements for any reason must provide advance notice to the chair ahead of the event, and pay one of the following applicable fees:
– $150 with at least one week’s notice,
– $175 with less than one week’s notice, or no notice.
Teachers who are unable to work due to an emergency must notify the chair immediately, the fee may be waived with the approval of the chair and the president.
RATINGS: 1+ = Medal    1 = blue ribbon    2 = red ribbon  3 = white ribbon   4 = green ribbon
TROPHIES: Students who have participated in Forum Auditions for three years (need not be consecutive years), and whose ratings average 2 or higher, will be awarded a trophy.

REGISTRATION STEPS:

  1. Gather all of the student information and complete the entry form.
  2. To access the entry form online, go to the Forum Auditions dashboard (click on the dashboard tab at the right-hand corner of the page or scroll to the bottom of this webpage). The entry form looks like this:

  • At the bottom of the form, click the green “Download” tab to save the form onto your computer. Then, click the blue “Email to Admin” tab.
  • Technology is unreliable, so please also email the entry form to irina.y.kuo@gmail.com as an attachment by Nov. 6th, 2024.
  • Mail one check (made out to FORUM) for all your students ($30 x total number of student entries) to the following address: Irina Kuo, 5123 Hawthorne Springs Ln., Sugar Land, TX 77479
    You may also give the chairperson your check on or before the deadline.
  • Note that the number of pieces and technical requirements under “Performance Requirements” are based on the student’s level. The list of repertoire pieces, however, are recommendations to be referred to as guidelines, not requirements.
  • Teachers are responsible for filling out their students’ critique sheets. The critique sheets can be downloaded from the Forum Auditions tab on the Teacher Dashboard. Be sure each student brings a completed critique sheet on the day of the audition.

 

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

 

REPERTOIRE (please see repertoire guidelines):

Level 1-3:  3 pieces of two contrasting periods, plus technical requirements.
Levels 4-7:  2 pieces of contrasting periods, plus technical requirements.

TIME ALLOTMENTS:

Level 1 & 2: 7 minutes per student
Level 3 & 4: 10 minutes per student
Level 5 & 6: 12 minutes per student
Level 7: 14 minutes per student

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Students must play the technical requirement of their respective level or a higher level.  Grading of the scales will be judged as being satisfactory or unsatisfactory.  A grade of unsatisfactory will result in lowering the rating by one increment. (For example a 1+ will be lowered to a 1, 1 to a 1-)

Scale Groups:   A:  C, F, B            B:  G, B-Flat, E           C:  A, F-Sharp, E-Flat           D:  D, C-Sharp, A-Flat

Level 1: No scale requirement.
Level 2: Scale group A, B, C, or D. Majors only.

2 octaves in 8ths, MM quarter note = 60

Contrary or parallel motion, hands alone or together.

Level 3: Scale group A, B, C, or D. Majors only.

3 octaves in triplets, MM quarter note = 60

Parallel motion hands together.

Level 4: Scale group A, B, C, or D.  Majors and relative harmonic minors.

4 octaves in 16ths, MM quarter note = 60

Parallel motion, hands together.

Level 5: Scale group A, B, C, or D. Majors, relative harmonic and melodic minors.

4 octaves in 16ths, MM quarter note = 80

Parallel motion hands together.

Level 6: Same as level 5, except for MM quarter note = 100
Level 7: Same as level 5, except for MM quarter note = 120
